How to Get Rid of Junk in Renton, WA

Renton homes with single-family garbage service get one free Clean Sweep pickup a year from Republic Services: two bulky items and ten bags. Anything beyond that is charged per item. Paint thinner, pesticides and other household chemicals go free to King County's hazardous waste sites. Mattresses, appliances, electronics and remodel debris each have their own route. This guide covers where every common item goes.

Item by item

Where Each Type of Junk Goes in Renton

Find the thing you are trying to get rid of, then follow the route. Rules change, so each card links to the office that sets them.

Furniture and Other Bulky Items

Sofas, chairs and other bulky items can go out on your one free Clean Sweep pickup, two items at a time. After that, Republic Services' on-call bulky collection charges per item. Its 2026 rate for furniture is $97.26 a piece.

Mattresses and Box Springs

A mattress counts as one of your two Clean Sweep bulky items. King County recycles mattresses and box springs at its Bow Lake, Factoria and Enumclaw stations, for a per-item fee and up to six per visit. They won't take wet ones. The Renton station takes mattresses as garbage, also for a per-item fee.

Appliances

Clean Sweep doesn't take appliances, and King County stations won't accept washers, fridges, stoves or water heaters as garbage. Recycle them at Bow Lake or Factoria, or book Republic's on-call pickup. Microwaves, toaster ovens and other small appliances go free at the curb on request.

TVs, Computers and Electronics

Washington's E-Cycle program recycles TVs, computers, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers and portable DVD players for free. King County stations don't accept TVs or computers, and Clean Sweep won't take electronics. Use the E-Cycle locator to find a drop-off near Renton.

Paint, Chemicals and Batteries

Oil-based paint, thinners, pesticides, pool chemicals, gasoline and propane tanks go free to King County's hazardous waste sites. Latex paint goes to a free PaintCare drop-off instead. Household batteries can go in the boxes at Renton City Hall, the Community Center and the Senior Center.

Yard Waste and Holiday Trees

Branches, clippings and leaves go in your organics cart, which is collected weekly with no limit. Holiday trees go free at the curb in the first two full weeks of January. They must be unflocked and bare, and cut in half if over six feet. Clearing a big overgrown lot is too much for one cart.

Concrete, Dirt and Remodel Debris

Remodel debris isn't a Clean Sweep item. King County's Renton Recycling & Transfer Station is at 3021 NE 4th St and charges by material and weight. Asbestos needs approval first, and concrete pieces over 200 lb need county approval. Untreated, unpainted wood and all-metal scrap go free at the curb on request.

Things Still Worth Using

Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King & Kittitas Counties is based in Renton. Its nearest store is at Southcenter, 1185 Andover Park West. It takes furniture, cabinets, doors, flooring and working appliances under ten years old. Free pickups collect from outside your home.

Motor Oil, Tires and Fluorescent Tubes

Six AutoZone and O'Reilly stores in Renton take used motor oil free, up to five gallons a visit. Bow Lake and Factoria recycle up to four car tires per customer. Fluorescent tubes can go at the curb by request, two per collection and ten a year.

Paint thinner, pesticides, pool chemicals and other hazardous products

Self-hauling

Hauling Junk Yourself From Renton

Secure the Load

King County charges $25 to any vehicle that arrives with an unsecured load. Tarp and strap anything light, like cardboard, insulation, yard waste or bagged trash, so nothing can slide, fall or blow out.

Separate Before You Load

Cardboard must be pulled out for recycling at the Renton station. Bow Lake and Factoria want clean wood and scrap metal sorted out. Construction debris is refused from dump trailers unless it's under 20% of the load. Sort at home, not at the scale house.

Check the Station First

The Renton station limits vehicles plus trailers to 25 feet bumper to bumper, against 40 feet at Bow Lake and Factoria. Hours and accepted materials vary by station, so check before you load. The Solid Waste information line is 206-477-4466.

Weigh the Real Cost

King County fees go by weight and material, and new rates start January 1, 2027. ProviderOne, EBT and ORCA LIFT cardholders get $20 off each type of waste per visit. Add a borrowed truck, several trips and a lost weekend, and a whole garage adds up fast.

If hauling it yourself doesn't add up, tell us what needs to go and where it is on the property.
